How to Become a Certified Home Health Aide in NJ

Becoming a Certified Home Health Aide (CHHA) is one of the fastest routes into healthcare in New Jersey — and one of the most immediately meaningful.
The requirements
You must be at least 18, able to read and write English, pass a criminal background check, and complete a state-approved training program of at least 76 hours.
What the training covers
- Personal care and hygiene assistance
- Safe transfers, positioning and mobility
- Infection control and universal precautions
- Vital signs and observation
- Nutrition, meal preparation and dietary needs
- Communication, ethics and client rights
Certification
After completing training and the clinical component, you apply to the New Jersey Board of Nursing for CHHA certification. Certification is renewed every two years.
