Fall Prevention at Home: A Room-by-Room Guide

Simple changes that dramatically reduce the risk of falls for older adults.
Falls are the leading cause of injury among adults over 65 — and the majority happen at home, in rooms people have moved through safely for decades. Most are preventable with small, unglamorous changes.
Entryway
Secure or remove loose mats. Add a bench for sitting while changing shoes. Ensure outside lighting covers every step.
Living room
Clear walking paths of cords and low furniture. Remove throw rugs or tape them down. Choose chairs with armrests that make standing easier.
Kitchen
Move daily-use items to waist height so no stool is needed. Clean spills immediately. Consider non-slip mats at the sink.
Bathroom
This is the highest-risk room. Install grab bars beside the toilet and inside the shower — towel racks are not grab bars. Add a non-slip mat and consider a shower chair.
Bedroom
Keep a lamp or touch light within arm's reach. Add a nightlight along the path to the bathroom. Ensure the bed height allows feet to rest flat on the floor when sitting.
Stairs
Handrails on both sides, ideally running the full length. Mark the edge of each step with contrasting tape if depth perception is a concern.
An RN home safety assessment can catch what familiarity hides. We're glad to arrange one.
